Youth Vandalise Police Station, Burn Police Pickup

Residents of Yilo krobo municipal capital, Somanya have attacked the district police command, vandalised the charge office and burnt down the only patrol vehicle serving the whole district.

The attack follows the arrest of the Assembly Member for the Sarweh electoral area, Ebenezer Adamatey Jones Dendenden by the regional police command in Koforidua for questioning.

Meanwhile, six others have also been arrested.

Last Friday, the assemblyman allegedly led a group of residents to demonstrate against the high electricity bills, which resulted in the destruction of ECG property. See photos here

Today, Monday May 29, the aggrieved citizens mostly youth clad in red gathered and marched to the Somanya police station to demand the release of their leader and in the process vandalised the station as they outnumbered the police personnel on duty.

They burnt tyres at various locations in the town.

The police quickly called for reinforcement from Akuse, Akosombo and Koforidua to help stabilise the situation.

The regional police commander, ACP  Ebenezer Alex Mensah in a brief stated that the attack on the police was uncalled for, explaining that his outfit only picked up the leader to assist them in their investigations of Friday’s vandalism .

He vowed that the police are not going to rest until all those involved in the attack are brought to book, stressing that Ghana is not a lawless state.
