The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, has hailed the decision by President Akufo-Addo to appoint another woman for the position of Chief Justice.
The President on Friday announced Justice Sophia Akuffo as the successor to Madam Georgina Theodora Wood, who will be retiring in June.
Speaking at a SHE Summit held in Accra, the EC Chairperson urged all women in Ghana, to be more supportive of their fellow women in order to achieve the women empowerment needed in the country.
“Women need to be kinder to each other, we need to be more supportive of each other, we need to be more understanding,” she said.
“I remember as soon as Justice Akuffo’s name came up, one comment was that we just had one female [as Chief Justice] so we can’t have another. So I thought; we usually have male after male, but it’s never an issue. But one woman after another becomes an issue all of a sudden, and you will find other women following and before you know it, they are going to be saying all kinds of things about her.”
Mrs. Osei was hopeful that “if the women commit to supporting other women and recognize that holding those offices is a major sacrifice, I think we will be a lot more successful.”
