The victim was hit by scattered pellets from the musketry display by musketeers
A woman was shot and fatally injured during the final funeral rite of the late Paramount Queenmother of Okuapeman, Nana Dokua, at Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern region Friday.
The victim who was watching the funeral from a storey building was hit by scattered pellets from the musketry display by musketeers following a chief to the funeral ground.
Ama Darkwa,39, has been hospitalized at the Tetteh Quashie Memorial Hospital while the suspect has been arrested by the Akropong District Police.
Firing of musketry has been part and parcel of all festivals and funeral rites involving chiefs in the region.
However, the Eastern regional Security Council banned firing of firearms by musketeers in 2013 when one person was killed and two others injured in a shooting incident during the Akropong Odwira Festival.
Speaking to Starr News the Akropong District Police Commander Chief Superintendent Kofi Adu said investigations are ongoing in the matter.
The Police Commander explained that the suspect was not part of musketeers presented for training and approval by the police during such rites.
