This means that the attacker will miss Wednesday’s Spanish Super Cup second leg match against Barcelona. C Ronaldo will also miss upcoming La Liga games against Deportivo La Coruna, Valenica, Levante and Real Sociedad.
The 32-year-old was issued a five game suspension for pushing a referee in his team’s Spanish Super Cup win at Barcelona on Sunday, August 13, 2017. Ronaldo was shown two yellow cards -which resulted in a red, before he pushed the referee in the back on his way out of the field.
The Real sweetheart was shown the first yellow card for taking his shirt off and flashing his torso in celebration after he scored a go-ahead goal in the 80th minute.
He was then shown a second yellow card and was sent off for diving 2 minutes later. Disgruntled Cristiano lost his cool, chased after the referee and pushed him in the back.
The attacker was found guilty of ‘Violation of article 96 of the Disciplinary Code’, which relates to using “mild force” against the officials, including grabbing, pushing or shaking. He was also fined €3,805, with Real fined €1,750.
The Spanish football federation’s (RFEF) disciplinary code states that a minimum of a four-match suspension will be dealt as a result of “slightly violent” behavior. The maximum would have been 12 matches.
Real boss Zinedine Zidane expressed his dissatisfaction with the disappointing outcome. Though he did not dwell on Ronaldo’s referee shoving issue, he lamented that five matches was too long a punishment for the player.
I have been very clear in my response. What happened, happened, but when you look at the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo has got five matches, you have to admit that it is a lot…
Notwithstanding the turndown, Real Madrid could still take the case to the Spanish government’s Tribunal Administrativo del Deporte with a very slight chance of getting the remaining four games of the suspension reduced.
