The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong has bemoaned the increasing culture of violence being witnessed in the country following the change of government.
According to him, “this emergence of culture of violence is a threat to good governance and public safety.”
Speaking Wednesday May 31, 2017 on Morning Starr in the wake of the gruesome murder of Capt. Maxwell Mahama, he said “Ghanaians want good governance but this is not the kind of governance environment we want to see.”
Ghana in recent times has witnessed incomprehensible levels of lawlessness involving Delta force, a vigilante group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), irate youth in Somanya and the latest being the heinous killing of Capt. Mahama by marauding residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central region.
He said as a country “we are losing our sense of culture, our sense of passion to the extent that some women” engaged in the dastardly killing of Capt. Mahama.
“This thing must be condemned and not only that the ministry of interior and defense and this administration must quickly respond to this emerging culture of violence. We can’t continue like that as a nation,” he pointed out.
He thus called on the Christian fraternity to join the fight against the recent scourge in the country.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, Security Analyst, Dr. Kwasi Aning said the scourge will continue because the country glorifies violence.
He said “if we strip the murder case of the emotions, how have we, as Ghanaians, arrived at this point? Why should a group of Ghanaians feel that they can lift weapons against the people who are supposed to protect us? I have always argued that violence has become a currency in our society and it is becoming a sought-after currency.”
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo commiserating with the family of Capt. Mahaha assured that the culprits of the horrifying act will be dealt with ruthlessly, saying “no one will go free.”
