Owner of Elmina Sharks, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has revealed that plans are far-advanced to sign on a player from Brazil to play for his club in the Ghana Premier League.
Though many had described his intention as a herculean one, an optimistic Dr. Nduom said on Eezy FM in Accra that the decision to sign a player from South America to play in the GPL is to reverse the trend where Ghanaians had to travel outside to play in foreign leagues.
He mentioned that the pedigree of the Ghanaian league has risen to the level where foreign players should be encouraged to participate to add to the excitement and also help in increasing the revenue base of the clubs.
While acknowledging the difficulty in partaking in the league, Dr. Nduom, who is the President and Chairman of Groupe Nduom conglomerate, explained that the move to include foreigners in his team is aimed at boosting the morale of the team as they prepare to win the premier league next season.
“We have gained the experience we need in our first encounter with the league. We are determined we are going to stay in the league this year and then contend for the title next season,” he confidently expressed.
However, Dr. Nduom bemoaned the poor state of attendance at the league centres and advised stakeholders to formulate policies that will attract supporters to the various stadia.
Elmina Sharks will host Accra Hearts of Oak in a crunch encounter at the Nduom Stadium on Sunday, June 25, 2017, and Dr. Nduom is confident his team will carry the day.
“This is the first time our team, the Fearsome Elmina Sharks FC will be engaging with the Phobians and I feel very excited about it. I want to appeal to all our fans to come and enjoy good football and also experience what the feeling is like watching football in Elmina,” Dr. Nduom said.
