Head coach of Ashantigold, Charles Akunnor, has admitted his side deserved to lose against Elmina Sharks FC in week 23 of their Ghana Premier League (GPL) fixture in Obuasi on Sunday.
Akunnor’s side failed to beat the Fearsome Sharks for the second time in their meeting in the league by succumbing to a shocking 2-1 score line at home.
The defeat has compounded enormous pressure on Akunnor as he struggles to escape demotion to the Division One League.
Speaking at a press briefing after the match, the former Black Stars captain confessed that the Miners did very little to clinch the needed victory which could have enhanced their chances in the league.
He disclosed that his players lacked the mental composure playing against a much disciplined side like Elmina Sharks who were also struggling to avoid relegation with just a season’s appearance in the elite league.
”I am very disappointed. My boys were not tactically disciplined and we struggled with our play and I must admit a lot of things didn’t work for us,” Akunnor admitted in a post match interview.
”Defensively we didn’t do well, in the midfield we were weak but we have to accept our defeat, Sharks have really surprised us and we have to go back to the drawing board and came back strong next time.”
“They were very disciplined, they were very defensive and the only way we could attack them was to go through the wings and I kept saying it was difficult. Congratulations to them [Sharks]. We have to go back to the drawing board.”
Ashantigold currently lies 14th on the league log, and are just two points above the relegation zone with seven matches to end the season.
The Miners are due to travel to Accra to face Liberty Professionals who are also struggling to escape relegation.
