WAFA were in sensational form as they handed Accra Hearts of Oak a humiliating 5:0 defeat in Sogakope to go top of the Premier League table.
The Academy boys lost 2:1 to the Phobians in the first round, but their result on Sunday was more than a revenge against Hearts of Oak. They dented the Phobians pride, handing them their heaviest defeat in Premier League history.
Danger man, Richmond Lomotey scored a brace, but the main architect of the emphatic victory was new sensation Abdul Majeed Ashimeru, who got one of the goals and was adjudged man of the match. The other scorers for WAFA were Abdul Wahab Ibrahim and Caleb Amankwah.
Aduana Stars’ defeat to Chelsea in Berekum on Saturday means WAFA have now reclaim top spot and opened a two-point lead over their title rivals.
Chelsea defeated Aduana 3:2 in a dramatic game in Berekum. Chelsea opened the scoring early in the 3rd minute through Alfred Okai Quaye but Zakaria Mumuni equalised for Aduana before Bright Adjei put the visitors ahead midway in the second half. Chelsea however were not done, as Alfred Okai Quaye hit a late brace, including a dramatic 90th minute penalty to win the day for Chelsea.
In the Sunday games, Bechem United completed a double over Wa All Stars by beating them 2:0 at Bechem. Hafiz Wontah Konkoni and Ahmed Toure got the goals for Bechem United.
In Elmina, Sharks staged a late, dramatic win to scoop all three points against Medeama. With the match appearing to be heading for a draw, Emmanuel Otoo scored in the 90th minute before Farouk Mohammed sealed the win with another goal in added time.
Ashantigold continued their audacious mission to avoid the drop, and they registered an emphatic victory over visiting Dwarfs. They beat Dwarfs 3:0 with Richard Ocran scoring two penalties and Hans Kwofie getting the other.
In Kumasi, new signing Sadick Adams rescued a point for the Porcupine Warriors by equalizing through the spot after David Agordome had given Olympics the lead. The match was a setback for Kotoko who would have hoped for a continuation of their first win in eight matches in Tema last week.
The remaining matches of WEEK 17 also ended in stalemates, with Tema Youth and Liberty Professionals drawing 0:0 in Tema.
Bolga All Stars and Inter Allies drew 1:1 in Tamale with Ibrahim Giyasu on target for Medeama and Sadat Abuakakar scoring an goal to equalise for Inter Allies.
