The Volta River Authority, (VRA) has disconnected electricity supply to the campus of the Evangelical College of Education at Bimbilla for the nonpayment of bills.
The disconnection affected the administration block of the College, Residence of staff and some street lights.
The Vice Principal of the college, Alhaji Mohammed Anas told Citi News that the disconnection will greatly affect students who are writing their end of semester exams.
He said the college will not be able to pay the bills soon because it has not made any provisions for that.
He said it was the responsibility of the government to pay the bills and not the administration of the college.
“The government is responsible for the payment of institutional utilities so we were surprised when the VRA came to disconnect everything including streetlights. Right now, the most unfortunate thing is that the students are writing their exams and the lecture halls are very dark. They cannot study, let alone write the exams. We are appealing to the government to quickly come to our aid to resolve the issue so that the college would be reconnected otherwise we may continue to stay in the darkness for long because the college cannot do anything because we do not have money to pay.”
Meanwhile, some of the students have challenged the school to pay the bills, saying that utility bills are part of the component of their fees.
They also expressed their frustrations over the negative impact of the situation on their academic work.
“For me, I think it’s early days yet because I do not understand why the college should be disconnected. We pay bills as part of our fees but we are now going to wait on our leaders to meet with the authority of the school to see how far the problem could be resolved,” one of the students said.
“We are in a very critical moment because we are writing our exams and if one fails a subject, the resit is not an easy thing. The registration for one subject is hundred cedis minus transportation and other expenses. Normally, we do study in the night because, during the day, there is a lot of noise to the extent that you cannot study so we do our studies in the night and now the situation is going to affect us seriously if nothing is done. We are pleading with college authority to do something.”
The administration block of the college now relies on a generator for electricity supply.
