Former President of the Republic, John Agyekum Kufuor has been appointed the first ever Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). The appointment was announced by the University Council in a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Dr Stephen S. Yirenkyi.
“The council of the University of Mines and Technology at its 62nd (regular) Meeting held on 15th September, 2017 appoint Former President John Agyekum Kufuor as the chancellor of the university,” the statement read.

Kufuor’s appointment is a five-year renewable first tenure which took effect from the 1st of November, 2017. The appointment makes the Former President the Titular Head of the University who presides over all ceremonies of the university as well as confers all degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded by the university on qualified persons.
He is the first Chancellor ever appointed by the University, and a special congregation will be held in at the school for his investiture.
UMaT is a public university in Ghana, located at Tarkwa about 89km from Takoradi, in the Western Region. The school was initially established as the Tarkwa Technical Institute (TTI) on 3rd November, 1952 but metamorphosed over the years to become the University of Mines and Technology in 2004.
UMaT was mainly established to provide higher education in mining, technology and related sciences, and to act as a catalyst for the development of mining and technology in Ghana. And within the short period of its existence, the school has proven to be an important centre for the training of engineers and technologists from Ghana, Africa and other parts of the world.
It currently operates two major faculties – the faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Mineral resources Technology, with a number of courses offered in both. In addition, there is a School of Postgraduate Studies which co-ordinates all postgraduate programmes in the University.
