IT appears the aggressiveness with which we waged the war on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in our local parlance, is gradually waning.
THE situation now is more of a relaxed campaign against the Galamsey fight.
AND this has given some galamseyers the urge to continue their dangerous, destructive and illegal trade.
IT is sad to hear that seventeen about (17) galamseyers have perished in an underground pit at Nsuta, a gold mining community near Bondaye in the Prestea Huni Valley District of the Western Region.
SAD though, but this is one of the painful prices they pay while still being active in the galamsey business.
THE death of the 17 illegal miners brings to the fore how somehow relaxed we have been in our quest to end Galamsey in gold mining communities in the country.
EVEN in the wake of the ban on small scale mining and Galamsey activities, there have been numerous reports to the effect that galamseyers were still in active business, only this time around they had changed their modus operandi.
WE understand that and it has been confirmed in some mining localities that the galamseyers have resorted to working very deep in the night, thus becoming nocturnal beings.
THIS strategy, obviously, has been adopted by these galamseyers to evade the prodding eyes of the anti-galamsey taskforce set up in the mining communities.
THIS development also brings to light the need for us to revise our notes and restrategise to ensure that we stop Galamsey completely in this country.
THUS in the view of Today if the taskforce was not working 24/7 then we need to ensure that they work 24/7.
THIS strategy, we believe, will enable them arrest galamseyers who are still doing business even with a ban in place.
THE point is that we need to revive that aggressive campaign which we started in our mission to end Galamsey in this country.
AND we must do that willingly without fail to ensure that we protect our environment and water bodies for posterity.
THE fight against Galamsey must continue at full strength without becoming weaker if our target is to stop illegal mining operations.
