DEVELOPMENT cannot thrive in an environment of instability. This is because development is dependent on peace and stability.
ALSO, stable and peaceful environment enables citizens to contribute their quota towards the advancement of their countries.
IT is for the above reason that Weekend Today is worried about the killings of law enforcers by armed robbers.
THE killing of police officers on duty by armed robbers appears to be increasing in recent times and it definitely portends grave danger for our national security.
IT is almost like in every week there will be a report of either a cop being gunned down or killed by some armed robbers.
AND these are people who are mandated by law to protect our lives and properties.
THUS, it becomes even more scaring for us the civilians to see that those mandated to protect us are being killed by armed robbers.
SERIOULSY, it is a trend if not quickly addressed by the Police Administration, could have dire consequences. One of which could dampen the spirit of our law enforces and their quest to fight crimes in this country.
WE should equally understand that some of these slain cops are the breadwinners of their families.
THEREFORE, their untimely deaths, aside from their associated pain, bring untold economic hardships on their families.
HOWEVER, it is refreshing to see that in the wake of these cop killings, our law enforcers have not relented in their efforts to pursue and arrest armed robbers and fight crimes in this country.
WEEKEND Today believes that the Police Administration needs to re-strategise and find a panacea to this relentless killing of cops.
SOME of the strategies could be ensuring that our law enforcers in the line of duty wear bullet-proof vests to shield them from robbers who are always ready to draw blood at the sight of the police.
GOVERNMENT must also do its bid in ensuring that law enforcement agents in this country are well resourced to carry out their policing duties.
OUR advice is that we must not allow armed robbers and for that matter any miscreants to cow our law enforcers into submission as they go about their legitimate duties.
WE as citizens should do our best to help the police with any piece of information we may have on those miscreants whose only aim is rob and kill.
WE all have crucial roles to play if the police will do well to rid our society of the nefarious activities by a few in our communities.
WE should be prepared to volunteer the police with information, no matter how small.
WE would like to use this opportunity to appeal to communities to invest in active vigilante groups to help the police fight crimes of those few miscreants and expose their activities.
IN so doing, they would be sending messages out that it is not only the police who are against their nefarious activities but the communities as a whole.
WE all deserve to live in a peaceful country where criminals have no place so the police will also live their lives.
