Information reaching Today indicates that some police officers from the Asankragua District Police Command in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region on Monday, July 24, 2017 besieged an illegal gold mining site at Fureso community and took away the miners concentrated sand, mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of money.
According to the information available to Today, the policemen on the said Monday, went to the illegal gold site with the intention of seizing equipment and machines belonging to the illegal miners, but few metres to the place the police officers begun shooting indiscriminately.
That shooting, Today gathered, scared the miners who took to their heels, leaving behind their concentrated sand and money. A source close to the affected miners revealed to Today on Saturday, July 28, 2017 that the police officers after scaring the people away were seen jubilating over the discovery of the concentrated sand with the hope of selling and make money. “Whilst they were jubilating, there were some illegal miners around who were watching them, so later they chased those people also away.
As they ran, they left their money and mobile phones in their cars. These policemen took away everything that these other miners left behind,” the source disclosed. The source stated that after they had succeeded in their looting, they met a beautiful lady in the Fureso village for which one of the police officers approached and asked her: “why should a beautiful girl like you be doing in this village and the girl told him the reason she was in the village.”
“In the process the police officer gave his telephone number to the girl in his quest to propose love to her. So the fortunate thing was that another police officer also went to the same girl and gave his telephone number to her. “…and the girl, smart enough, called the two police officers separately on their telephones to tell them that she needs their personal pictures to show to her friends that she has police officers who are her boyfriends.
So quickly the police officers sent their pictures and identifications to the lady respectively. And now the girl has in her possession the pictures of the two police officers,” the source disclosed to Today.
The aggrieved galamsey operators, however, questioned the operations of the police personnel whether they were there to stop their work or to enrich themselves with what they (the Galamseyers) left behind. “This galamsey menace should we stop or steal as some police officers are making mockery of it? the source asked. It would be recalled that the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources launched a national campaign against illegal mining popularly called galamsey.
