A student of Tempane Senior High School in the Upper East region has died of meningitis, 3news.com has gathered.
The student was admitted at the Presbyterian Hospital in Bawku on Wednesday, December 13 in a critical condition.
He unfortunately passed away Saturday morning in Bawku while on admission, TV3’s regional correspondent Rabiu Tanko Mohammed reports.
His death comes less than a week when another student of Bawku Senior Technical School died after being diagnosed with meningitis.
About 25 more students are currently on admission for observation. Some of them have been confirmed to have meningitis, Rabiu said.
The mood at the Tempane SHS over the death of the student is a sad one as the students cry for their departed colleague.
The wave of deaths in some senior high schools in the country attributed to viral infections has been a worrying development to school authorities and the nation in general.
About 85 students were affected with the H1N1 virus (swine flu), claiming the lives of four students of Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti region within a spate of two weeks.
The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) together with the Eastern Regional Health Directorate proposed that heads of SHS should be compelled to at least employ a resident health officer when a second-year student of the Koforidua Secondary Technical School in the Eastern Region died last week of a suspected case of meningitis.
