Tamale Stadium – From now onwards, the Tamale Sports Stadium shall be called Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially renamed the stadium after the late former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.

Acknowledging his indelible impact on the development of sports in the country, Incumbent Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, inaugurated the stadium on behalf of the President on 10th December 2017, at a colorful durbar of chiefs from the entire Northern Region.
The renaming was part of the fifth-anniversary celebration of the passing of the former VP who contributed selflessly to the development of sports in the country.
Late Aliu Mahama was a native Dagbon and served as President John Agyekum Kufuor’s Vice President from 2001 – 2008.

His development and promotion of sports, particularly football, began with the Real Tamale United (RTU) Football Club, where he was a founding member and bankroller for several years.
Delivering the speech on behalf of the President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia enumerated the relentless support the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama offered sports, particularly in the northern part of Ghana, and the whole country at large.
The renaming of the Tamale Stadium was also in fulfillment of a campaign promise by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The President had promised prior to the 2016 elections, to rename the stadium after the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama should he garner a majority of the votes cast.
We may not be able to name all for they are many, but the former VP will never be forgotten for his exceptional roles in Ghana’s sports.
Late Alhaji Aliu Mahama lobbied for the stadium’s construction in Tamale as part of the stadia built to host the 2008 Cup of African Nations in Ghana.
Mahama who was a soccer enthusiast was among the founding fathers of Real Tamale United (RTU) that bonded the people of the Northern Region.
For those who do not know, Late Aliu Mahama groomed most of Ghana’s soccer legends including football legend, Abedi Pele Ayew.
He remains an inspiration to the youth as well as sportsmen and women irrespective of their socio-economic background or ethnicity, and a national icon.
