A student from South West London has smashed her education crowdfunding initiative – with a little help from Stormzy.
Fiona Asiedu set up a crowdfunding account to raise the £12,000 she needed to cover the cost of a Masters programme in Human Development and Psychology at Harvard Graduate School of Education.
A friend of Fiona’s shared her crowdfunding drive on Twitter, asking for retweets to get Stormzy’s attention. The power of the internet came to her aid and Stormzy retweeted the appeal to his 695,000 followers.
You may think that was enough, but it looks like the merky one took it one step further. A donation of £9,000 has been made on the crowdfunding site under the name of Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Junior and his PR has confirmed to us the donation was made by Stormzy.
On the Crowdfunder page, Oxford University student Fiona writes saying she is “particularly interested in psychological development of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, specifically ethnic minorities and those from working class backgrounds” and goes on to say: “Studying Human Development and Psychology will equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to generate effective interventions, particularly targeted at young people, to uphold healthy psychological development within this community.”
The total cost of Fiona’s nine months at the prestigious university adds up to £59,000. Fortunately, she has applied for and received an external scholarship and financial aid from the department she will be studying in, leaving her to raise the rest.
It looks like Fiona and her friend are pretty grateful, offering to take Stormzy out for a Nandos to say thanks.
We have contacted Fiona for comment.
