Stephen Leroy Appiah has been named by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as the Team Manager for the Ghana National Team – The Black Stars. This is in fulfilment of long held rumours that the ex-footballer will certainly be included this time in the nation’s football administration.
Stephen Appiah’s appointment comes at the heels of the recruitment of one time Ghana Coach, Kwesi Appiah, to succeed Avram Grant who quit the team after the disappointing 2017 AFCON campaign. This is the first time the former footballer will be serving as a technical member of the Black Stars after retiring from football five years ago.
In addition, former Black Stars goalie, Richard Olele Kingston has also been appointed Goalkeepers trainer; while Ibrahim Tanko and Maxwell Konadu were named Assistant Coaches.
Stephen Leroy Appiah is a 36-year-old retired Ghanaian international footballer who played as a midfielder for the Ghana national team, as well as other local and foreign clubs. He earned the nickname ‘Tornado’, for being a box-to-box midfielder who has the ability to score goals from all angles with his powerful shots.
Stephen started his formal football career in 1995 and retired in 2012. His club career included spells with Hearts of Oak, Udinese, Parma, Brescia, Juventus, Fenerbahce, Bologna, Cesena and Vojvodina.
The former Juventus midfielder is popularly known for being the first Ghanaian captain to qualify the Black Stars to a FIFA World Cup. That was after he led the team to the 2006 edition of the competition in Germany. Click here to read more about Stephen Appiah.
