The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) believes the Energy Minister has an equally bigger managerial issue to deal with under his nose, and suggested to him to give management of his office to concession.
As the sector minister, Mr. Boakye Agyarko has been leading the process to privatise the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana. This will enable Ghana access US$469,300,000 under the Millennium Challenge Power Compact agreement program, signed between the government of Ghana and the government of the US.
But the PUWU is not in support of the move to give part of ECG to a concession.
The Union’s requests to meet the minister so that it can put forward a cogent reason to persuade the government from travelling on that course have not been honoured, Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi, General Secretary of PUWU claimed.
He said barely a month after Mr. Boakye Agyarko assumed office in January, the Union wrote him a letter requesting for a meeting, it was followed with at least three more letters.
“[But]since he took office he has never met us” he lamented in an interview with Winston Amoah on TV3’s Hot Issues, Saturday.
The minister claimed he has yet to see any such letter, Michael Nyantakyi said with disappointment, pointing to poor structure and lack of seriousness attached to government business at the minister’s office.
“We have written more than three letters, the excuse they always give is that we haven’t seen any letter. And these are not letters posted, these are letters individuals, human beings walk into the office of the minister and the secretary signs the letters.
“But in-between the secretary and the minister’s office, and the minister has not seen those letters, may be the concession should start from the minister’s office,” he proposed in outright rejection of ECG concession.
Mr. Nyantakyi insisted that privatising the management of ECG was needless though he admitted that the bane of ECG was government’s interference in it’s management.
