Uk-based Ghanaian Gospel singer, Sonnie Badu has given an unexpected reaction to the ongoing controversy over the dressing sense of uprising dance hall musician, Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng Known in showbiz as Ebony reigns, and he is receiving hot back lashed for his comments.
Ebony Reigns has since her appearance on the Ghanaian music stage, vividly presented herself as indecent in both words and action. The 20-year-old singer who became popular with her hit-song, “Kupe” has severally described herself as the ‘90s Bad Gurl”, often saying that she is “truly a bad girl”.

While many must have expected Sonnie Badu to condemn Ebony’s half-naked dressing style, the singer did just the contrary by putting up a defense for her. Speaking in an interview with Peace FM’s Sammy K, Badu said that Ebony must have a reason for dressing the way she does and cautioned people against criticizing her but to rather listen to her story.
“Everyone has his or her own reason for behaving in a certain way, therefore before you criticise anyone, listen to the person’s story and know what they have been through,” he noted.
Sonnie Badu was actually responding to a question on if he enjoys secular music, to which he sais he listens to songs from Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, Ebony etc. He pointed out that Ebony Reigns is a great talent and for that, what she needs is love and not insults despite her half-naked mode of dressing.
“All Ebony needs is love, not insults because she is indeed a great talent, although she is known for half-naked dressing, she didn’t dress that way when she launched her album recently…So find out her reason and just show love,” he added.
Continuing, the gospel singer said he minds his business, pointing out that most of those criticising Ebony are the same people who sneak out to go and watch her shows, labeling them hypocrites; adding that “she has a management so leave her to do her thing.”
Although Sonnie Badu’s advice could have been well taken, his failure to condemn half-naked dressing as a gospel artist appears to have instilled a feeling of disappointment among Ghanaians who have started lashing out at him over his comments.
Descending on Sonnie Badu on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, Wednesday, Artiste Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Media Excel, Ernest Kwesi Ennin slammed the gospel musician for defending Ebony’s dress code and suggesting that her critics are hypocrites.
According to him, no one hates Ebony but it is necessary that her outrageous dressing is talked about in order to protect morality in the showbiz. Making reference to Ebony’s ‘acceptable’ outfit to her recent concert launch, Kwesi Ennin pointed out that the criticisms have really instilled some sense of decency into the young artiste.
Ennin who described Sonnie Badu’s stance as “unfortunate”, expressed utter disappointment in his defence of immorality especially while considering his status as a “man of God”.
“If Ebony was his sister and happens to go on stage with this kind of dress, how would he talk to the sister?…What baffles me is that he is a man of God. He is supposed to at least, add some amount of words into shaping the girl instead of trying to paint all of us as satans. I find it very unfortunate. We should be able to chastise anybody who would want to go naked in the name of showbiz. If Sonnie Badu thinks we are hypocrites, I’d prefer to be a hypocrite in this direction than allow Ebony go wayward,” the Media Excel boss stressed.
Meanwhile, Badu is not the only one to have defended Ebony’s provocative dressing sense. Her own father, Nana Poku Kwarteng according to a Graphic Online report, said he supports everything her daughter does, from her provocative outfits to her raunchy performances because he is not a hypocrite like other Ghanaians!
“I am supportive of anything my daughter does and anything she wears. I am not ashamed as a father, the truth is that, I choose what she wears and I bless her before she goes out to perform. Some Ghanaians are hypocrites and I am sorry but I am not one of them,” he reportedly said.
Further defending her daughetr, Mr. Kwateng said Ebony Reigns dresses the way she does because of her genre of music – dance hall.
“What people see out there is what we want them to see and that is because she is an artiste and needs a brand that will sell. For God’s sake, she is a Dancehall artiste and she wears what will make her feel confident when performing on stage. Something that will depict the genre of music and songs she churns outs”, he added.
