After the 5th Late Professor Evans Atta Mills Memorial, his family still lies in thick darkness as regards the actual cause of his death…
It is quite disheartening that after five years of Ghana’s former president, Late Professor Evans Atta Mills passing, his family, particularly his son is still at loss over the actual cause of his death. The 5th Atta Mills Memorial organized by the National Democratic Party (NDC), was held on Monday, the 24th of July, 2017 in Accra.
The ceremony saw several NDC bigwigs, including former president John Mahama, friends and family members in attendance.

Following the memorial service and wreath laying ceremony which was held at Asomdwee Park in the Osu Cemetery, Late Atta Mills only son, Sam Kofi Mills once again reiterated the family’s ignorance as far as the cause of Prof. Mills cause of death is concerned.
Indicating keen interest in investigating what led to his father’s death, Kofi Mills made it clear that no autopsy report was presented to his family to clear their doubts.
“I still don’t know the cause of his death; the hospital never gave the family any autopsy report to show that this and this were the cause of why he passed away, so, I don’t think any member of my family will be able to give evidence of how President Mills passed away,” Mr. Mills stated.
Also speaking on the same issue last week, members of the late president’s maternal family indicated interest in supporting any attempt by President Akufo-Addo’s government to investigate circumstances surrounding the death of their son.
Professor Evans Mills passed on at the 37 Military Hospital, Accra, on July 24, 2012, making him the first Ghanaian leader to die in office. Though he was said to have died from an illness [reportedly cancer], circumstances surrounding his death has remained vague to the public and the media.
This has led to several speculations that there may have been a foul play behind his death, especially as it occurred barely six months to the all-important 2012 polls.
Recall that the Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP), ahead of the 2016 elections resurrected the issue, daring the NDC to produce the autopsy report of Late President Mills if they have nothing to hide about his questionable death.
PPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Kwesi Nduom had then accused NDC officials of putting up a public show of sorrow on Mills’ demise but privately rejoiced over his death, as it had paved way for their electoral triumph in 2012. The NDC however, made no response to PPP’s challenge.
Late Atta Mills, a native of Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region, was born at Tarkwa in the Western Region, on July 21, 1944.
Prof Mills served as Vice President under former President Jerry John Rawlings (1997-2001). He later won the 2008 elections, becoming the third president of the fourth Republic of Ghana. He however died 3 years into his first tenure in office.
Following his death, the country set out the 24th July of every year, to honour his memory and remember his unrivaled achievements and love for peace.
Late Mills who was survived by his wife and only son, was buried on 10th August, 2012 at the Presidential Cemetery in Osu.
