A Koforidua Circuit Court has granted the 12 suspects who attacked and vandalized the Somanya office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Police station to a GHc70,000 bail with two sureties each.
The suspects, Adamptey Jones Dendenden, Teye Israel, Michael Adjei Nortey, Theophilus Narh, Kosivi Amana, Wisdom Tetteh, Jerry George Klutse, Sackey Wisdom Larweh, Senyo George, Felix Tawaih, Tetteh Emmanuel and Bacha Emmanuel, were escorted to the court on Tuesday by about 40 police personnel from the national SWAT and RDF Unit.
They were charged with causing unlawful damage, conspiracy to riot, rioting with weapons, unlawful assembling and causing unlawful damages to properties.
The court presided over by Ms. Mercy Adei Kotei had on two occasions turned down a bail plea for the accused persons when their lawyer, Simon Animley, requested for bail on grounds that the suspects would not interfere with police investigations.
Hundreds of angry youth in May 2017, besieged the Somanya Police station, vandalized properties, set fire to a police car, also freed four suspected criminals in police custody.
Their action saw many officers around the station, fleeing for their lives.
Their action was sparked by the arrest of a resident who was accused of masterminding an earlier violent demonstration by residents against the ECG over high bills.
14 suspects were later arrested in connection with the attack.
