The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on Saturday humbled the Harambee Stars of Kenya to take an early lead in Group F in the qualifying campaign for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Julius Wobay and FC Zurich’s Umaru Bangura scored for the home side while Michael Olunga got the goal for the 10-man East African side.
The match was played at the National Stadium in Freetown and it was the first competitive game for former national player John Keister, who took over the team from Ghanaian Sellas Tetteh barely a month ago.
Saturday’s win has taken the Leone Stars to the top – at least until Ghana play Ethiopia on Sunday – of Group F.
Their next encounter will be away to Ethiopia in March 2018.
Winner of the group automatically qualifies for the tournament, to be staged in Cameroon, while the runner-up could joining the continental showpiece as one of the three best-placed runners-up.
