A 41-year-old man who claims to be a qualified nurse, and allegedly been operating an abortion joint at Chorkor Lante Maami in Accra has been arrested.
Godwin Kwame Adadzawa was said to have locked up one of his victims, a 22-year-old student, for four days and sexually assaulted her to compensate for her inability to foot her abortion bills.
Hospital equipment, believed to be used for the illegal abortion, including what looks like surgical scissors, were retrieved from the suspect’s make-shift joint which has been disguised as a pharmacy shop, the Police said.
Adadzawa who was arrested Thursday following a complaint to the Police by one of the victim has denied engaging in illegal abortions, and that he has been using the instruments retrieved for treating wounds.
He claimed he graduated from as a nurse from the University of Ghana School of Nursing in 2004 after which he worked at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra.
According to him, he travelled outside the country and returned later to establish the supposed pharmacy shop which is claimed to be his abortion joint
He told Police interrogators the complainant in the case had already taken abortion medication before she reported to his outfit. He claimed he only gave her a medicine to fast-track the process.
Police say the girl was introduced to Adadzawa by her friend to abort the one month-old pregnancy after her fiancée refused to accept responsibility.
The La District Police Commander, Chief Supt. Oduro Amaning, said the victim allegedly deposited her Ipad with Adadzawa because she could not raise the full amount charged her for the abortion in December 2016.
He said the suspect ater demanded sex compensate for the outstanding balance to which the victim declined but he locked up for four days during which he subjected her to sexual torture.
Chief Supt. Amaning said despite all that, Adadzawa refused to released the Ipad to the victim which she used as collateral, as well as GHC400 he promised the victim.
The victim thus on Wednesday, May 17 reported the matter to the Police who on Thursday arrested the suspect.
He is currently under investigation and expected to be put before court on Monday.
Meanwhile, Chief Supt. Amaning has appealed to other victims of the suspect to come up to assist in investigation.
