JJ Rawlings was born in Accra in 1947, to Madam Victoria Agbotui, a native of Dzelukope in the Volta Region and James Ramsey John, a Scotish chemist. He attended Achimota School before enrolling in the Ghana Armed Forces qualifying as a Pilot Officer in 1969.
JJ Rawlings was born this day in Accra to Victoria Agbotui and James Ramsey John, a chemist from the United Kingdom. The 70-year-old initially came to power as a flight lieutenant in the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979.
After he had initially handed power over to the civilian government of the late Hilla Limann, he took back control of the country on 31 December 1981 as the chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).
Rawlings resigned in 1992 when he was 45, from the Armed Forces; founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first President of the Fourth Republic. He legalized political parties and organized presidential and parliamentary elections in response to demands for a more democratic process concerning the governance of the country.
He was re-elected in 1996 for an additional four years. In 2000, he endorsed his Vice-President, Professor John Atta Mills, as the party’s presidential candidate in 2000, since he was barred by the constitution from contesting a third time.
Rawlings has stuck with the NDC through thick and thin despite the seeming feud between him and his party. The NDC founder has raised concerns over the possible defeat of the party during the 2016 elections, a development he likened to matters of corruption and lack of accountability.
