‘Sacked’ Pregnant Nursing Student Recalled To Take Exam

The Gushiegu Midwifery School has recalled Cecilia Awuni back to school to write her final examination a day after she was driven out of the examination hall because she is pregnant.

Following Joy News report on the matter, the Nurses and Midwifery Council has condemned the action, saying it is illegal.

Joy News reported Wednesday, that the Principal of the Gushiegu Nursing School, Winnefred Wondong, prevented a final year student, Cecilia Awuni from continuing with the rest of the licensing examination because she was found to be four months pregnant.

Mrs Awuni had taken three of her six papers and was in the exams centre for the fourth paper when she was asked to leave. She would have finished her papers on Friday, May 12.

A nursing student who was removed from an examination hall because she is pregnant may be given a second opportunity to take the exam.

The Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Felix Nyanteh, told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show following public outrage generated by the story.

He hinted he was going to hold a meeting with his management over the issue and subsequently instruct the Principal to make arrangements for the candidate to write a supplementary paper.

“That one we will instruct the principal to do that,” he noted.

According to him, they have met principals on various fora and occasions and explained to them how wrong it is to prevent student from writing exams because of pregnancy as the Constitution is against that.

“Pregnancy is not self-imprisonment so students should not be prevented from taking an exam. When we hear of such issues we come in to intervene,” he added.

On Thursdays afternoon Mrs Awuni was called to the school to meet the counseling team, which told her to report Friday morning to take part in the ongoing examination.

Her lawyers had indicated they would sue the school, but will that may change now that the school has rescinded its decision.
