Two suspected armed robbers shot and killed an unarmed police officer when he and his colleague attempted to foil their robbery operations at Lapaz near Las Pamas restaurant in Accra.
The other police officer who was seriously injured is currently on at admission at the Police Hospital and in stable condition, a police statement confirming Thursday afternoon incident said.
The statement signed by ASP Effia Tenge of the Public Affairs Unit of the Accra Regional Police command confirmed: “Two Police personnel on their routine motorbike patrols within Lapaz were shot by two unidentified men on unregistered motorbike who are currently on the run.”
To facilitate their movement, the police said, the two suspects abandoned their motorbike, snatched an unregistered ash Hyundai Elantra saloon vehicle and sped off towards Mallam junction direction.
The deceased officer who has not been named yet died while receiving treatment at the Police Hospital, the police said.
“Police is still gathering information on the incident and will update the general public in due course. Meanwhile. Police operations are still underway to get the perpetrators arrested.”
The statement entreated the general public to remain calm and support the police in their effort to arrest the perpetrators by volunteering useful information to police numbers 18555, 0302787373 , 0302 773695, 0302773906.
Meanwhile, Chief Superintendent Kwasi Ofori, the Accra regional director of operations of the Ghana Police Service described the act as “callous and barbaric”.
He told an Accra-based Joy FM that the police officers were unarmed and were assigned to the area to foster police civilian relationship.
