The Accra Sports Stadium is to undergo renovation at an estimated cost of GHC12.5million in the first phase, Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has confirmed.
The renovation work is expected to cover four main areas, including the pitch, the score board which has not been functioning for years, press booth and the VIP section.
There will also be significant work on the metals at the stadium.
The renovation work could lead to the closure of the 45,000-capacity stadium and likely to affect four clubs, including the Accra Hearts of Oak who are hoping to use it for their league games.
But the Youth and Sports Minister, Mr. Asiamah said they are hoping to find a solution to that.
“We are in a discussion with the GFA and the contractor for a proposed meeting for all the parties involved to sit down and see how best we can accommodate some of these league matches so there is a programme in place,” he noted
“I’m told, maybe Sundays we can allow that but the contractor will determined as and when that will be done,” he added.
Many public projects have stalled in the past because of a lack of funds but the National Sports Authority which has responsibility for the stadium is confident that will not happen with the latest renovation works.
It has admonished clubs to use alternatives for their league matches.
“We should be able to close all activities here and see to it that the job is done judiciously and there are other places league matches can be played; there is El-Wak, we can go to El-Wak and watch our football” Chairman of the National Sports Authority Board, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang said.
“I think we need to give them the space and the peace to work and work well” he noted.
