Sarpong talks to livefmghana.com about joining the Live FM team, being a super sub, her upcoming show on Television and more.
How would you describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know about you? AJ is very ambitious, very spontaneous usually. Great sense of humour, go getter. Almost a perfectionist…almost a perfectionist no one can ever be perfect but I think I’m a new breed of girls in their 20s who are … at a younger age than usual. Those who are not afraid or do not like boundaries to hold them down and would go after what they want regardless of what happens. I guess I’m the 2017 woman (laughs)
What are the differences between working at Starr FM and Live FM? Live (FM) is way more chilled. Starr (FM) has a lot more pressure because it’s a different demographic that are tuned into the station… at Live (FM), I can be my age but at Starr (FM) I’m supposed to act older. You have to mould yourself to fit into that space. It’s very easy for me but it’s also nicer to be able to act yourself. With Live (FM) I can laugh how I want to, I can talk how I want to, I can be a lot more free but at Starr (FM), I’m more reserved, I’m more mature to face the listener gap so it’s a lot more fun at Live (FM) that it is at Starr (FM).
Would you say getting to be yourself is the about the most exciting thing about being a part of the Live FM team? Yes! Because it is very important to want to be able to be yourself. Fortunately or unfortunately for me, I’ve always been typecast. I’ve always been older than I am and because of that it is easy for me to slide into different roles so I’m very versatile. I literally, at a point in time was filling everyone’s slot.
Being able to be myself is not entirely easy for me because of how I’m supposed to fill in for everybody else so it’s nice to be me on air so l love Live (FM) and you can vibe with everyone here so it’s good.
Does having to fit into the shoes of other people in a way moulded you into what you are now? Yes! You are allowed to make mistakes. Doing someone else’s show, if I do anything on air… I’m just a sit-in so you are able to correct your mistakes so by the time you are ready to do your own you are moulded into a better presenter. It’s one thing that I’ve realised across the years doing this because jumping from place to place doing different things means have made me a more versatile person so I can be ‘amended’ in lot of ways that a lot of people can’t so it’s good, it’s fun to have that kind of opportunity so yes, it has made me a much better person.
KOD previously hosted ‘Live From The Capital’ which you host now, have you been able to make it your show so far? I think I have. Live From The Capital is a great show, it’s a great concept. KOD set really high standard for it but I think I’m able to fit into it, not in the same way he does but in my own way and I try to bring my own elements on board… even in the interview style. I rather now focus on more random questions and try to get the guests take on current and trending issues rather than making it more or a personality profile. So I’m trying to bring my own elements into it. It’s still early days but eventually I’m hoping to make it the best Friday night show in the entire world (laughs)
Anything else you want to add? There is a new show I will be hosting on GhOneTV very soon so I’m very excited about that. I’m trying to fit into a space that has been done but I want to do it better, so it’s going to be a lifestyle based show so people should expect that.
