Minister for Labour and Employment Relations, Ignatius Baafuor Awuah has urged employers to consider qualified persons with disabilities (PWDs) for jobs to push the disability inclusive society agenda.
The minister recommended Christian Morgan of TV3 Talented Kidz fame for an ambassadorial role and pledged to support his initiatives when Morgan’s management team embarked on a capacity building visitations in Accra.
SpreadLove Home & Abroad, management of Christian visited the Ghana Federation of disability organizations (GFD) to learn more basic strategies in promoting disability inclusive society.
GFD has since its inception supported disability advocacies in the country including Christian Morgan’s participation in Talented Kidz which Morgan appreciated with a citation.
Yaw Ofosu Debra, the President of GFD indicated that “Morgan is evidence of the claims we’ve been making throughout our advocacy campaigns. He gives a credence to our claim that PWDs have potentials that can be tapped to benefit the nation as a whole.”
Disability unfriendly environment and inadequate resource teachers are some issues challenging inclusive and special schools in the country.
At the Ministry of Education while the SpreadLove team was still on its capacity building tour, Christian Morgan appealed to the special education division to make inclusive and special schools more disability friendly.
Lawyer Anthony Boateng who is the director of the division expressed the division’s view: “We’re very conscious about the environment. The Central Regional Minister even promised to do something about it. We are working together and you’ll see improvement of the school environment.”
The director further outlined community sensitization tips to support the team in promoting disability inclusive quality education.
Later at the labour ministry, the team also called on the sector minister to fight for more PWDs employment policies and also applauded the roads ministry for involving PWDs in tollbooth operation.
Present at the discussion was newly appointed ambassador for Egypt Paul Okoh.
While expressing government commitment to ensure that PWDs are not left behind in the society, the minister also challenged PWDs to take advantage of available resources to meet job requirements.
He was pleased with the SpreadLove NGO, congratulated Christian Morgan for defiling all odds to participate in an all inclusive campaign and recommended him for an ambassadorial role. “His achievements is for all PWDs and should be a source of inspiration for all differently abled persons. We couldn’t have had any better ambassador for the ‘disabled’ in society than him.”
The minister pledged to render his support behind SpreadLove Home & Abroad and Christian Morgan initiatives. ‘We’ll want to assure you that we’ll join you with your projects to make a case for PWDs.”
