The Dean of the International Programmes Office (IPO) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, has been appointed as Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
He replaces Mr Jacob Kor who has been Director-General of the GES since January 2015.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made the appointment pursuant to Section 12 (1) of the Ghana Education Service Act, 1995 (Act 506).
Prof Opoku-Amankwa’s appointed letter, dated April 20, 2017 and signed by President Akufo-Addo congratulated and urged him to indicate his acceptance or otherwise within 14 days after receipt of the letter.
Prof Opoku-Amankwa holds a PHD in Language and Education from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. He studied Social Sciences at the KNUST.
He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Publishing Studies at the KNUST and has knowledge about the social, political, economic and cultural life in Ghana, having studied, worked and researched in a number of communities across the country for over three decades.
He schooled at Suhum Secondary Technical before entering Wesley College in Kumasi where he obtained his Post Secondary Teachers Certificate and taught for over 10years.
After a series of higher education, he was appointed lecturer at the KNUST in 1999 and by dint of hard work, he was promoted to senior lecturer 10years afterwards and became an Associate Professor three years ago.
He has held a number of positions at both national and international levels including Dean of the Faculty of Art, Vice Dean and Head of Department of Publishing .
Besides organizing and coordinating a number of workshops and training programmes on education and communication, he is into cademic writings for tutors in Colleges of Education, Senior Administrators, Professional staff of academia as well as media practitioners and publishing houses.
He has done a number of research works in instructional communication, mothers tongue, material development, language and literacy development as well as development communication.
