Police Service Promotes Two Killed Officers

The Police administration has posthumously promoted two of its officers who were killed in the line of their duty.

The officers, Lance Corporal Robert Kumi Larbi Ackah and Constable Michael Kporyi lost their lives in two separate incidents at Dawadawa on the Buipe-Kintampo road and Michel Camp in Accra respectively.

A statement issued by the Police Service said: “No.47523 Corporal Robert Kumi Ackah’s promotion takes effect from 27th May 2017, while No. 52071 Constable Michael Kporyi’s promotion takes effect from 11th June 2017.”

The late Corporal Robert Kumi Ackah met his untimely death on 28th May, 2017 at Dawadawa on the Buipe – Kintampo highway, when he was escorting an OA passenger bus to the Northern Region. He was stationed at the Tamale Rapid Deployment Force at the time of his death.

He was said to have been mistaken to be an armed robber by his colleagues in a Patrol Team who shot and killed him while escorting the bus.

An earlier police report said the patrol team, which had responded to a distress call on the Kintampo-Buipe highway, gunned down Lance Corporal Ackah because of mistaken identity.

Police preliminary investigations revealed that at about 2.30am, a patrol team on Kintampo – Buipe highway had information that some armed men had blocked the road between Kawampe and Gulumpe.

The team proceeded to the scene and saw about 20 cars parked alongside the road, according to a police SITREP [situational report], seen by the Daily Graphic.

They were said to have maneuverer to the scene where the armed robbers and the robbers reportedly opened fire on the patrol team. The team also returned fire immediately and bypassed the scene to a distance and turned back to the scene.

At the scene, they spotted someone in mufti with a rifle standing in the midst of the passengers who were lying down. The patrol team were said to have mistakenly took him to be a robber and shot him in the thigh, the SITREP said.

In the case of the late Lance Corporal Michael Kporyi, he was shot by two suspected armed robbers at Michel Camp in the early hours of Tuesday 13th June 2017, when he was on his way to his duty point. He was also stationed at the Tema Rapid Deployment Force at the time of his death.
