The Ashanti Regional Police Command has caused the arrest of three police officers for allegedly aiding armed robbers to escape from lawful custody.
They are Chief Inspector Kennedy Kwame Nyanteh, stationed at Twedie Police Station, Inspector William Armah stationed at Regional Visibility Unit and Detective Sergeant Kyei Mensah stationed at Ashanti Central District CID.
A statement by the police on Friday said the officers were arrested on Wednesday 31st of January 2018 in connection with the whereabouts of two convicted prisoners, Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh and Fredrick Asante, who were convicted for the offence of robbery and sentenced to 11 and 10 years in hard labour respectively on 12th October 2017 by the K .M. A Circuit Court in Kumasi.
The escapees “have since not been sent to prisons to serve their sentences”, the statement said.
Preliminary investigations, the police said, have identified No. 39637 D/ Sgt Kyei Mensah as the investigator of the case who aided the escape of the two convicts as he failed to take them to the Kumasi Central Prisons to serve their respective sentences.
The investigator has admitted to the offence of aiding the escapees, the police statement said.
Upon interrogations, he mentioned the parents of the convicts C/ Inspector Kenneth Kwame Nyanteh and Inspector William Armah influenced him with GHS 10,000 to free the convicts.
Meanwhile, the C/ Inspector and the Inspector who were immediately arrested and also interrogated admitted influencing the investigator with the said amount, the police said.
All the three officers are currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
Meanwhile, convict Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh, 33, was rearrested on Friday 2nd February 2018.
“Efforts are still being made to apprehend convict Fredrick Asante age 28 years who is currently at large. The Command has however instituted a team to delve into all convicted cases to establish whether or not convicts are taken to Prison after they have been convicted by the court.
“The command will not in any way protect any officer or group of officers who will involve themselves in any action that will tarnish the image of the service,” the statement signed by the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Ken Yeboah said.
