Deputy Minister of Transport, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, says Ghana Police Service (GPS) is incapable of heading the mandatory tow levy and towing project slated to begin July this year.
According to him, the project was a brilliant one that cannot be left to the service which was not well equipped to handle it.
He said the police administration might have a few towing cars however, the administration was not in the capacity to spearhead the project set to roll out to prevent accidents and provide safety on our roads.
The minister made the statement on Accra-based Class FM yesterday where he mentioned that the project has been put on hold in order to allow for a broader consultation due to some concerns raised by Ghanaians.
He was of the view that the consultation will enable the various stakeholders like the Road Safety Commission, the Road Safety Management Sector, Government of Ghana, DVLA, private towing companies and the ministry of transport to identify loopholes and snaps that have been identified by citizens in order to prevent future consequences.
He urged Ghanaians to embrace the initiative and be supportive of the project which does not only offer recovery services but national ambulance services as well.
Meanwhile, journalist and Marketing Communications Manager of Road Safety Management Limited, Roland Walker, has stated that it was proper for the new law to be revised and scrutinised to make sure it serves its purpose of saving lives and providing safety on our roads.
He explained that the project was not being stopped as government was very much interested in the exercise.
On the matter of readiness, Mr. Walker assured the general public that various measures have been put in place such as trained paramedics, towing vehicles, motorbikes, drivers and personnel in various locations to start towing broken and disabled vehicles.
He was hopeful that the exercise when started will not be slowed down by any undue problems.
The implementation of the mandatory vehicle towing levy slated to begin in July this year was frozen to allow for sensitisation of all stakeholders and education of the programme.
