A bashful couple are hiring a nanny to give their children ‘the talk’ because they can’t face doing it themselves.
The parents, from Bath, placed an advertisement on Childcare.co.uk for a ‘part-time nanny’ to teach their daughter, eight, and son, seven, about topics including periods, pregnancy and masturbation.
Writing on the site, the mother explains she is not satisfied with the school’s teaching and has struggled to broach the subject with their children at home, admitting she would ‘ideally like to avoid it altogether’.
Instead she hopes to find a professional to tutor the children in ‘puberty, intimacy and consent’ – and is willing to pay £2,500 to the right person.
The post, which was shared earlier this month, details in full what will be expected of the successful applicant.
The ideal candidate must cover topics including ‘consent with a possible discussion of rape culture and sexual protection including ‘the Pill, condoms and abstinence’.
The tutor must also address ‘how sex is between two people who are in love’, adding ‘preferably married but we’re modern enough to know that’s not always possible’.
The children must also be taught about ‘other gender types – transgender, non-binary etc.’, as the mother admits ‘this is an area we would really struggle in’.
The advertisement states the candidate would ‘ideally be OFSTED registered’ and ‘must have an up-to-date DBS check’.
The sessions will take place at home but the parents will not be in the room.
The sessions will also be recorded in case the children need a refresher on any of the subjects in the future.
Richard Conway, founder of Childcare.co.uk said: ‘Having ‘The Talk’ is a rite of passage for any parent and their children, but it can be a difficult conversation to have, even for the closest of families.
‘These parents are clearly willing to pay handsomely to make sure the sex talk is handled in the best way possible.’
