Two persons have badly been injured with one said to be very critical as he battles for his life after two groups clashed over a parcel of land at Avenor near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in the Greater Accra region.
The police confirmed to TV3 Midday Live that they have arrested a key suspect in the attack believed to have been staged by some spare parts dealers.
The Spare Parts and Mechanic Association are up in arms against the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) over the ownership of the land.
Only Wednesday, an Accra High Court injuncted the spare part dealers from entering, interfering and dealing in any manner whatsoever on the land, pending a final determination of the matter.
But the spare part dealers who are resisting attempt by the GPRTU to develop the land allegedly attacked workers there, vandalised properties and causing serious harm on Thursday morning.
Chief Surugu Laman, who is leading the GPRTU to execute a project on the disputed land, told TV3’s Godfred Tanam that two persons contracted to work on the land sustained serious injuries.
One is a carpenter and the other a mason. “The carpenter is almost dead,” he recounted.
He claimed the spare parts dealers are squatters on the land.
The disputed land which originally belonged to the Ghana Railway Authority was handed to the GPRTU in 1983, he recalled.
GPRTU however, he said, decided to accommodate the spare part dealers whose goods their members do patronise.
But it was later realised that the area was “choked” with development projects without the GPRTU’s approval and the Union is unable to “control” them, he said.
Chief Laman said his outfit sought clearance from the Ghana Railway Authority as well as Environmental Protection Agency before undertaking any project on the land.
The spare parts dealers were not available for comment as tension mounts in the area.
