Promoters of the much anticipated WBO Middleweight World Title Eliminator between Ghana’s Obodai Sai and world and undefeated Africa Middleweight Champion, Walter Kautondokwa, have confirmed that the bout would still go on as planned despite fears of a postponement.
Sanctioned by the WBO and IBF, the fight between the two boxers was part of a boxing show put together to thrill boxing fans and the former five division world champion, Floyd Mayweather, who was billed to tour Africa on June 16th, 2017.
Speaking in an interview in Accra, General Manager of Lions Promotions, Michael Kofi Oduro, said though they were disappointed by the failure of Mayweather to embark on his historic tour to Ghana, it will not in any way deter them from staging the bout.
According to him, both Sai (32-2 (25KO’s) and Kautondokwa (14-0 (13KO’s) are all poised to offer a thrilling encounter to boxing fans on Friday.
“Despite that setback, Sai and Kautondokwa will battle it out this Friday; the fight is coming on live at the Bukom Boxing Arena. We at Lions Promotions promise to deliver an exciting night of pound-for-pound boxing and therefore, call on the general public to come and support Obodai Sai in this fierce battle.”
“We appeal to the media to support us deliver a memorable fight night on Friday, 16th June, 2017. Regular Tickets will go for GHC20 and GHC50 at the Ring Side. We have a special package for all supporters unions,” he disclosed.
Kautondokwa will defend his WBO Africa Middleweight strap against Sai with his vacant IBF Africa middleweight belt also at stake.
Other top local fights including the rematch between Michael Ansah (One Bullet) and Patrick Okine known as the Mallet will also be on the bill while Ghana’s highest ranked boxer, Rafael Mensah, who is number 3 in the WBA Super featherweight world ratings, will take on Edward Kambasi.
