Authorities of Nungua Senior High School in the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District in Accra have appealed to government to release funds for the completion of stalled infrastructural projects in the school which development was negatively affecting teaching and learning.
An Assistant Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Janet Siabe, who expressed the concern to the media on the sidelines of a leadership seminar held for students, said the school may be compelled to turn down some fresh admissions in the next academic year as it lacked the necessary logistics and infrastructure to accommodate them.
“We expect to take at most 500 students come September, anything more than that we won’t be able to admit because we don’t even have enough classrooms to accommodate them. At the moment an 18-unit classroom project which started about 10 years ago is still not completed,” Mrs. Siabe disclosed.
“We have had to force students into another 7-unit block which is still under construction because they cannot sit outside to study. A class now contains over 60 students which is very bad and we lack dormitories, staff bungalows among other challenges which make effective teaching and supervision difficult,” she lamented.
The seminar, which was organised by Drillteam1, a youth centered non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), was to equip students with practical skills to take up various leadership positions in the country.
With support from partners including Riverside Safety Consult, Demikes Stories and Manomey Media Consult, the seminar was on the theme: “Raising New Generational Thinkers Through Leadership.”
A lecturer at Regent University College, Mr. Josiah Andor, underscored the need for people to see leadership positions as an opportunity to serve and not to amass wealth for themselves.
He said it was high time perceptions about taking up leadership positions to enrich oneself “changed to serving the people and placing their interest first above others.”
Mr. Andie entreated the students to avail themselves to leadership opportunities as that could help them to better contribute to the country’s development in the nearest future.
The President of Drillteam1, Shadrack Hammond, said it was about time Ghana invested into new breed of leaders to properly handle the country’s affairs as most of the current crop were fast ageing.
“We should have capable young people to lead the parties, be in Parliament and other key positions so that when the current leaders fade off, we don’t create a vacuum that will cost the nation,” he stated.
Some students who participated in the seminar expressed their appreciation to the organisers and promised to take action on some of lessons learnt.
