The board chairman of National Sports Authority (NSA) has lashed out ongoing allegation that the Baba Yara sports stadium is preferred to be used for funeral and other social activities rather football activities.
A few weeks ago, the Director of the Ashanti Regional Sports Authority, Joshua Mensah, disclosed that it has become necessary to hire the stadium out for funerals and other social activities to enable them raise funds to maintain the fast-deteriorating facility.
“Let me be honest with you, no football match will be allowed at the Baba Yara Stadium henceforth,” he said, “because we don’t make enough money from the matches to maintain the facility and so henceforth the stadium will be given out on Saturdays for only funerals and other social activities.”
However, the board chairman of the NSA, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, at a press briefing in Accra, rubbished the claims and said: “Clearly, stadiums are not used for funerals.”
“We use various park outside the stadium for funeral activities. We can never have a funeral on the pitch.”
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium is currently the home ground of the current FA CUP holders, Asante Kotoko.
The stadium will be used by the Porcupine Warriors for the CAF Confederation Cup this Sunday.
