Some youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale Constituency in the Northern Region went on rampage on Friday night, destroying party property.
This follows the nomination of one Abu Mohammed, a resident of Tinguri, a suburb of Walewale, after assembly members failed to confirm Saaka Sayuti, who was earlier nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the East Mamprusi District Chief Executive.
The Constituency office and the Office of the Bawumia Youth for Change suffered the major destruction after air-conditioners, computers, chairs, tables, and some party documents were set ablaze by the angry youth.
The destruction, which was done under the cover of darkness, was to shield the perpetrators from arrest as 3news.com gathered the youth did that to prevent their unscrupulous act from being captured on camera.
3news.com’s visit to the scene of Friday’s rampage revealed clear evidence of the extent of destruction.
Some youth, who spoke off camera, revealed that the destruction was necessary as they feel discriminated by the rank and file of the party in the constituency because they expected party executives to present one of their own as DCE.
“We want someone from Walewale because we’re the majority but they gave us someone from Tinguri, that small community.”
The last attempt in trying to confirm Saaka Sayuti, a resident of Walewale, witnessed a rejection by assembly members.
He polled 22 votes out of the total of 45 votes cast.
That resulted in exchange of blows as assembly members from the Walewale township (the minority) accused their colleagues from the suburbs (the majority) of deliberately rejecting their choice of candidate.
Saaka Sayuti was rejected on the basis that he did not contribute to the victory of the party in the constituency hence not the right candidate for the position.
Friday’s rampage is said to be a retaliation by constituents in Walewale as the new appointee is not from Walewale and can never be confirmed.
Lots of people have suggested that the possibility of getting a new appointee not from Walewale to be accepted by residents of the community is not possible.
The constituents are also alleging that the new nominee is a new face who didn’t sacrifice in any way for the party and therefore cannot be accepted in the District.
