The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Kojo Appiah-Kusi was physically attacked by the party youth at a funeral on Saturday April 29, 2017
Dr Appiah-Kusi was said to have been assaulted by the yet to be identified young men at a funeral ground held for an NPP member at Trede in the constituency believed to be members of his own party.
The aggrieved supporters of the party’s Constituency Secretary Prince Karikari who has been denied an opportunity to be nominated District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area accosted the legislator and gave him punches on the face landing the honourable member on floor.
According to eyewitnesses, the youth came from nowhere and to the surprise of the other mourners at the funeral ground literally striped the MP but for the swift intervention of some opinion leaders.
The crime of the MP is that some persons accused him of working against the nomination of Prince Karikari who also showed interest in the District Chief Executive (DCE) position in the area.
The matter has been reported to police for investigations as the victim was discharged of minor injuries
A member of the MP’s entourage and a polling station executive Mercy Ofosu-Mensah confirmed the incident to mynewsgh.com but called for adequate security protection for the lawmaker in view of the attack.
“We went for a funeral yesterday after exchanging pleasantries with members of the bereaved family which is customary; we sought permission to take our leave. Suddenly we saw these young men from nowhere emerging with offensive weapons with a woman hurling insults at the MP. We realized it was an embarrassing situation and tried to calm nerves but that exacerbated the matter with some of the enraged youth pelting stones at the honourable. We had no option but whisk him away for his own safety”, Mercy Ofosu-Mensah recounted.
According to her, they could not have watched on whilst the angry youth subjected the MP to such an embarrassing spectacle with his funeral cloth that was nearly ripped in the name of internal party squabbles.
