For the second time, a Nigerian has won the prestigious BBC World News Komla Dumor Award. Amina Yuguda from northeastern Nigeria is a news presenter on local network Gotel Television, where she has reported on high-profile news stories, including the Boko Haram insurgency.

Ms Yuguda who said the award was a huge honor to her, acknowledged the importance of telling the African story.
I was overwhelmed with joy. Storytellers have always had an important role in Africa… this is what defines us. Today journalists are taking on that responsibility.
This is the third edition of the award which was initiated a few years ago.
The award was instituted in 2015 in honor of Komla Dumor; one of the greatest and passionate journalists at BBC World News, who died aged 41 in 2014. Komla died of cardiac arrest on 18 January 2014, at his home in London after being on air the day before.

The Ghanaian was known for his unprecedented hard work and unequivocal dedication to telling the story of Africa, during his time at BBC.
The passionate journalist left an indelible mark in the world of journalism through his outstanding contributions at BBC, hence the move to continue his legacy with the award.
This award sees a large number of African given a huge platform to showcase their talents in a bid to get the top spot. Previous winners of the Komla Dumor Award were Ugandan news anchor Nancy Kacungira and Nigerian business journalist Didi Akinyelure.
Amina Yuguda impressed the panel with her story-telling and her ability to convey complex ideas in a way that resonates with a wide audience. She will start a three-month placement at the BBC in London in this month, September.
Given her understanding of the corporation’s impact among pastoralists in her hometown, the 2017 Komla Dumpr award winner is excited to work at the BBC.
