National Democratic Congress (NDC) has bemoaned the recent broad daylight shooting and killing of innocent people in the country.
At a well attended press conference yesterday, the National Chairman of the party, Mr. Kofi Portuphy, lambasted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for ‘woefully’ failing to ensure the security of Ghanaians.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo has “turned a peaceful Ghana into a pool of blood.”
Mr. Portuphy catalogued evidence of what the NDC described as “NPP government-backed terrorism.”
According to the NDC chairman, the broad daylight killing of a police officer at Abeka Lapaz in Accra last week by armed robbers, the recent killing that occurred at Ardeyman where some assailants killed the Development Chief of the town, Nii Tetteh Sarbah were examples of insecurity in country.
“We are tired of the violence; we are tired of the shooting and killing of our men and women by hired thugs…we know where the AK47s come from, we only want respect and common decency in this country,” Mr. Portophy told the crowded journalists.
He again lashed out at the NPP vigilante groups like Delta Force which beat up an Ashanti regional security capo and Invisible Forces which were also linked to the violent take-over of some state agencies like the Passport Office and the Kintampo Water Falls.
He also accused the NPP vigilante groups of disrupting proceedings at a circuit court in Tema where alleged armed groups were freed.
Although the Prison Service has come out to explain there was no such attack at the court, the NDC national chairman insisted that armed robbers stormed the court.
“These are evidences of historic incorporation of militancy and violent extremists in governance. Did we vote for change for us to be killed or we voted for development and growth?”
“In the last six months, there is no denying that lawlessness has been allowed to run riot….hardly does a day pass by without news being inundated with horrifying crimes done with brazen bravado.”
Apart from the well-known NPP militant groups such as Invisible Forces and Delta Forces, the NDC alleged that there also exist another group with ‘blood-curdling’ name ‘Volta Crocodiles.’
He said the activities of these violent groups have worn out the police because the groups ultimately have political backing or ‘Godfathers’ in government.
“The master plan is to weaken the resolve of the police to function at full throttle,” he said.
He alleged that “the desperate-looking IGP, David Asante-Appeatu, virtually threw up his hands in despair at the helplessness of the security forces in addressing the NPP’s violent excesses.”
