Seven people, including armed robbers and a National Democratic Congress chairman, have been shot dead at Tatale in the Northern region in a gun battle that foiled a robbery attack Sunday evening.
The gun shoot-out started when some gun wielding armed robbers arrived on a motorbike at the Tatale Market at about 4:30pm Sunday in an attempt to rob some motorbike dealers in the market of their sales.
Eyewitnesses say luck eluded the robbers who attempted to flee the scene but were chased by the residents amidst gun battle.
Four of the robbers were eventually killed at Nonyado, a community in the district while the others managed to escape, eyewitnesses told TV3.
Personnel from the Tatale- Sanguli District Police office who responded to distress call joined the residents in the gun battle with the armed robbers which resulted in the death of three residents.
Two of the three have been identified only as Papa, an NDC chairman for Nonyado and one Asando.
Two other residents who were said to have sustained gunshot wounds were rushed to the Zabzugu Health Center for medical attention while the other four robbers managed to escape.
The Tatale – Sanguli District Police Commander, Eric Akaboah, confirmed the incident to TV3 and said all seven bodies have been deposited at the Zabzugu Hospital.
Tatale – Sanguli district shares borders with Togo and traders within the eastern corridor and some parts of northern Volta ply the international road to and from Ghana and Togo.
The Tatale market serves as a black market for the trading and changing of CFA and Ghana Cedis thus prone to robbery.
