Prempeh College, beat off competition from St. Thomas Aquinas and Adisadel College to win the 2017 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ)at the National Theatre in Accra, yesterday.
Organised by the Ministry of Education and Primetime Media with support from Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) and Tigo, Prempeh College won the competition for the second time in two years by accumulating 53 points ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas who were able to amass 51 points.
Defending champions Adisadel College failed to glitter in this year’s competition by accruing a disappointing 31 points score from five rounds.
Prempeh College were rewarded with a cash amount of GH¢40,000 while St. Thomas Aquinas made away with GH¢30,000 with Adisadel College receiving GH¢20,000.
All finalists also received packages from Tigo and GCB.
The Prof. Ewurama Addy award for the most outstanding team went to Tamale Senior High School (SHS) with an accompanying cash prize of GH¢2000. This award was instituted by Bubune Adih, a contestant of the Mfantsipim School’s 1999 winning team.
Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu award for the best female contestant also went to Zuweira Baba Mohammed from Tamale SHS. Zuweira went home with a cash prize of GH¢ 5,000.
In 2015, Prempeh College became the first school to score the highest points in the new NSMQ format when they trashed Pope John SHS in the one eighth stage of the competition scoring 80 points.
Just two years down the line, the kings of Ashanti Region put on a staggering performance when they met GSTS and Aduman SHS at the quarter finals scoring 82 points to break the record which they previously held.
