President Nana Akufo Addo will pay a three day official state visit to Zambia from the 26th to 29th of June, 2017. The visit is upon the invitation of the Zambian President, Edgar Lungu.
President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has been in power since January 2015. Under former President Michael Sata, Lungu served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Defense.
Following Sata’s death in October 2014, Edgar Lungu was adopted as the candidate of the ruling Patriotic Front for the January 2015 presidential by-election, which was to determine who would serve out the remainder of Sata’s term
In the election, he narrowly defeated opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema and took office on 25 January 2015.
President Edgar Lungu’s election was disputed in court by the then opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema, but the court dismissed the case.
President Akufo Addo’s visit comes on the back of reports that a number of political opponents of the Zambian leader are languishing in jail.
Prominent among them are Obvious Mwaliteta and Elisha Matambo from the opposition United Party for National Development who have been incarcerated supposedly over post-election violence and armed robbery.
