The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has destroyed 14 tipper trucks and one excavator belonging to some sand winners in the Northern Region.
The owners had defied a one week ultimatum given by the REGSEC after a report was made by the Ghana Water Company, compelling a team of military personnel to set the vehicles ablaze when they arrived at Dalung, a suburb of Kumbungu about 10pm on Saturday.
The activities of the sand winners at the bank of the Dalung river have over the years affected the Ghana Water Company, increasing its cost of production.
The one week ultimatum had elapsed since December 12, 2017 but the operators did not budge as they continue to win sand in the river increasing turbidity.
The complete disregard of the ultimatum compelled REGSEC to storm the site on the evening of Saturday March 3, 2018.
Meanwhile, the Association of Tipper Truck Owners in Tamale have hinted of a demonstration to protest the destruction.
