MzVee, Adomaa and Yaa Yaa will perform at the SKY Girls launch party on April 29 at the Aviation Social Centre. The artistes are fronting a campaign to help fight smoking amongst teenage girls.
First launched in Bostwana, SKY Girls seeks to promote its smoke-free message in the context of what interests girls at the age where fashion, friends and music becomes attractive to them.
The initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will spread across all ten regions of the country in order to reach teenage girls in very remote areas.
Venus Tawiah, Business Development Director of SKY Girls spoke about the dangers of smoking during a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday.
“Sisha is continuously being marketed as the sophisticated and cool habit of the youth and this trend has been noted to reflect in other African countries and the Gates Foundation had partnered with Good Business to develop a programme to address this potential epidemic.”
She stated that the approach of empowering girls is designed not only to help them say no to tobacco but also to other harmful behaviours and building a generation of young women confident in their choices.
Tawiah added that the team will adopt an innovative mobile strategy to support activities online, radio and through “Sky Girls” magazine which will soon be launched: “This will ensure that the girls have a comprehensive support system to help them stay true to themselves and become the best they can be.”
Globally, cigarette smoking is common among the youth especially the smoking of tobacco products such as pipes, shisha etc.
These rates are even higher than the corresponding rates in adults in many countries. This indicates the necessity for tobacco regulations for adolescents to include tobacco products other than cigarettes, and the need to increase awareness about its harm.
