Member of Parliament (MP) for North Dayi, in the Volta Region, Ms. Joycelyn Tetteh, has hinted that plans are far-advanced for the outreach programme she intends to embark on to educate her constituents on the dangers of sickle cell disease.
According to her, lots of people do not know the consequences of the disease and how to avoid it hence her intention to educate her constituents on the disease.
Speaking in an interview with Today, the North Dayi lawmaker therefore, cautioned Ghanaians, especially the young ones, who want to enter into marriage to first check their sickle cell status before tying the nod.
“Don’t marry just because you are in love, do all the necessary checks before you get married or commit yourself to have children,” Ms. Tetteh advised.
She explained that the disease is a genetic condition which affects the red blood cells and causes it to break down with other accompanying diseases, which include the damage of lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, and the eyes.
In view of this, Ms. Tetteh advised prospective partners to include the disease in their counselling.
“We need all hands on deck as Ghanaians to fight against the sickle cell disease”, she cried.
“I am calling on the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders such as Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana, to regularly visit schools, churches, Mosques, work places, football clubs and other associations to create awareness and educate people about the disease,” Ms. Tetteh suggested.
According to her, she was putting health issues as a priority in her constituency.
To this end, she invited individuals, groups, governmental and non-governmental organisations to help in the health drive in the constituency.
