The lawyers of a Chinese woman in Ghana, who is called Monica Wei, have written to the editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide, Mr Kweku Baako Jr., demanding that he clarifies the identity of a certain Monica, also Chinese, who he named as being part of a ring of powerful Chinese women engaged in illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) in Ghana and are blackmailing powerful Ghanaian men with sex videos in their possession.
It is recalled that last week Saturday, 6 May, Mr Baako revealed that three Chinese ladies: Asia Huang popularly known as Aisha, one Monica and a third whose name he could not readily recollect, were holding powerful Ghanaian politicians to ransom with sex tapes, thus, the inability of Ghanaian authorities to crack down on their illegal mining activities.
Mr Baako had told Multi TV’s news analysis programme Newsfile that Ms Huang, the most powerful among the trio, as well as her ring members, had in her possession, videos and audiotapes of her sexual escapades with some “powerful” Ghanaian men.
“…She’s got accomplices – the other one is called Monica, the other the name has slipped me because it’s a Chinese name. Part of their strength is that they built up a certain system of blackmailing. They are women so I’m not going to use certain words, I’m not going to say certain things.
“As to when they came into town, what they intend to do, who they were, what they were, had nothing to do with galamsey, but gradually they moved from that particular trade into galamsey.
“They have video and audio recordings of people who are powerful, videos of people who we have entrusted with responsibilities to protect us as a people. That’s how dangerous the game is and that is where the strength and power of these Chinese women are coming from,” he said last week.
On the backdrop of his revelation, the lawyers of Ms Wei, are demanding that Mr Baako provide further and better particulars on the ‘galamsey’ Monica he named in his earlier submission.
According to Ms Wei’s lawyers, Mr Baako’s partial disclosure of the identity of the ‘galamsey’ Monica has exposed their client to embarrassment. They also said their client is the only Chinese lady in Ghana called Monica. The same lady, they added, also happens to know the said Asia Huang and has been serving as an interpreter for her fellow Chinese who find themselves in the grips of the law in Ghana.
Speaking about the letter on Saturday 13 May, Mr Baako confirmed to Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of Newsfile that “… they are asking me to clarify, they are demanding clarification of the identity … I was intrigued that she is the only Chinese Monica in Ghana, I’m surprised.”
“If I knew the full name, I might have said it,” he said, adding: “You recall that there was a third name I had forgotten, I didn’t mention so Madam Monica Wei, if it’s not you, why bother? When the evidence comes out, at the appropriate time, when the evidence of those people engaged in illegal mining – the Chinese – … and the Monica is featured, we would know, so, I’m surprised that any lawyer anywhere will write such a letter to me…”
According to him, “they are on a fishing expedition.” “If I were them, I will relax. They should relax. Tell them to exercise patience. … I don’t even know her.”
