There is seeming tension in the governing New Patriotic Party in the Upper East region, after the Regional Minister allegedly caused the arrest of former Upper East regional chairman of the party, late Adams Mahama’s brother.
Nuhu Mahama Akalbila was arrested by the police in the early hours of Saturday, TV3’s Upper East regional correspondent Rabiu Tanko reports.
Though the reason behind his arrest is sketchy, he suspects the minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, is only interested in abusing his office.
Rabiu overhead the suspect, who was in the CID office at the Bolgatanga District Police Headquarters, claiming the Regional Minister had accused him of “underrating” him whilst the party was in opposition, and therefore it was time the minister showed him and others where power lies.
Nuhu Mahama, while narrating the incident to his wife at the CID office, said he sent his contract certificates to the Regional Minister to be signed.
He added that without any provocation, the minister just got angry by his mere presence and started calling him all kinds of names, as he wondered what he did to warrant the arrest and humiliation from minister.
Meanwhile, the Constituency Women’s organizer for Bolgatanga East of the NPP, Gifty Ntaaga who appeared incensed by the minister’s action joined hundreds of NPP sympathizers to storm the police station.
She was furious about the leadership style of the regional minister, accusing him of disrespecting them and adopting divide and rule tactics in the region.
As at 4:00pm Saturday, Nuhu Mahama Akalbila was still in police custody and was being interrogated by the CID.
